Infinity symbols and autism

The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted that our Spectrum logo is a rainbow infinity symbol, but why did we choose this and how is it linked to Autism? As with everything we do at Spectrum, we listen to autistic advocates about how to describe and represent Autism.

Here is an explanation from Autistic Truth on Facebook who is a “diagnosed Autistic person from the UK sharing about what life is like for me!”

“There’s the rainbow colour spectrum infinity symbol that is for Neurodiversity [of] which Autism is a part. Because Autistic people are more likely to have other neurodivergent conditions too… it’s why the Rainbow Infinity Symbol is the most popular amongst Autistic people.

We also have the gold infinity symbol which was created by Autistic people for Autism Acceptance…. And in the periodic table of elements gold is ‘Au’ which is the first two letters of Autism/ Autistic which is pretty cool”.

At Spectrum, we also chose the rainbow infinity symbol as we believe it represents inclusion, as every autistic person is included in this symbol with their own individual neurodivergent profiles. We loved the gold infinity symbol too, but through the rainbow infinity symbol really represented the children and young people we meet every day.
