Before the Autism Assessment

Many families speak to us at Spectrum about how to talk to their child or young person about the ADOS-2 part of the assessment and what to expect. Before a child or young person is seen, one of our clinicians will give a family a call and talk through what to expect with the parent or carer and will answer any questions. They can advise on how to talk to your child or young person about what to expect too. It’s all very dependent on each individual child or young person, but we do recommend sharing this fantastic graphic with younger children to help them to understand. Created by NeuroWild, she states, ‘Taking your kid to an Autism assessment?

Let them know what’s going on. It’s not a scary thing figuring out what kind of brain you have. And it makes a lot of sense to do it. How else would you know how to take care of it? Start the conversation on the right foot. Being Autistic is fine. Being confused, isolated, and thinking you’re broken is not. Yes?’
