Autism and Definitions

Sometimes, understanding how to talk about Autism and Autistic people can be very confusing even for those of us who have been working in this area for a long time! At Spectrum, we are grateful we are able to draw on insights provided by Paul (check out his profile on the About Us page), who helps us be both neuro-affirming and neuro-inclusive in how we work with children and young people. However, sometimes we do need guidance from the wider Autistic Community and we are grateful for the information shared by Autistic Advocates such as ‘Autistic and Living the Dream’. On their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/autisticandlivingthedream they state that they are ‘sharing my experiences as a queer neurodivergent person living in the UK’. They use the pronouns They/Them. In a recent post, ‘Autistic and Living the Dream’ shared this really helpful guide to definitions used when talking about neuro-divergency https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=809040724667732&set=a.420092660229209

We just wanted to add, for those not familiar with this term, that a Neurotype is used to describe a difference in the way the brain functions and responds to the environment. This could include Autism, Attention Deficit Hyper-Activity (ADHD), Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Tourette’s among many others.
